NIGHTSPOTS
Sunday Jul 6, 2008

All events run from 9:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. unless otherwise noted.

Club Above:
Dance music with a DJ.

Conor O'Neill's: Traditional Irish Session
All invited to join or listen to an instrumental jam session. Followed at 10 p.m. by karaoke.

Dreamland Theater: Theodore Music
Country-folk Americana with a distinct Mexican flavor by this quartet from St. Louis led by singer-songwriter Justin Kinkel-Schuster. "The bulk of the ten tracks on Songs for the Weary have the pulse of a slow heartbeat, an acoustic frame supporting these folk dirges and story-songs," says Riverfront Times critic Christian Schaeffer in his review of the band's debut CD. "Like the songs of Will Oldham and Jason Molina, there is a melding of antiquated and modern styles, and the songs that result tell stories and set moods with minimal accoutrements." Opening acts are Bone Orchard Revival, the local alt-country duo of Jeni Lee Richey and Adam Arscott, and Matt Jones, a local pop-folk singer-songwriter.

The Firefly Club: "Elevation."
Funk and hip-hop by DJ Graffiti and other DJs TBA. Also, an open mike session.

The Firefly Club: Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings
(5-8 p.m.) This local 10-piece big band is one of the few to specialize in the old-time big-band music of the late 1920s and early 1930s associated with Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver. Arrangements by the renowned early-jazz pianist James Dapogny and tubaist Chris Smith. The rest of the lineup includes 3 saxophonists/clarinetists, 2 trumpeters, a trombonist, a guitarist/banjo player, and a drummer.

The Necto: "Vision Sunday"
Guest DJs spin house and techno records.

Old Town: Chris Bathgate
Local singer-songwriter who writes heartfelt, poetic story songs in a variety of moods. Tonight he is joined by other musicians TBA.
