The Zula Patrol (12:30 p.m.) is an animated audiovisual exploration of weather, both terrestrial and interplanetary. Black Holes (2:30 p.m.) is an animated audiovisual show that begins with the formation of the early universe and the birth and death of stars and concludes with a simulated flight to a supermassive black hole lurking at the center of the Milky Way. Fireworks Show: Ypsilanti Township. This spectacular display of fireworks over Ford Lake returns after a 4-year hiatus. Preceded immediately by a performance of patriotic songs by the Ypsilanti Community Band, a 50-member adult ensemble directed by Jerry Robbins. The program includes "American Folk Rhapsody," "America the Beautiful," "Big Cage," "Finlandia," "Block M March," "Miss Trombone," "The Stars and Stripes Forever," and more. Also, the Little Mr. & Ms. Lake Shore contest (5 p.m.), a flag ceremony (6 p.m.), a kids parade (6:45 p.m.), and the Ypsilanti Idol contest (6:30-8:45 p.m.). "Top of the Park": Ann Arbor Summer Festival. Through July 6. A beloved summer tradition continues this year on Ingalls Mall and features music by local or area bands and a KidZone with fun and educational kids activities, such as face painting and balloon artistry. The live entertainment is followed at dusk (Sunday through Thursday) by free movies. Food concessions from area restaurants. Tonight: the Great Lakes Myth Society (8:15 p.m.), a local folk-rock sextet whose music is an eclectic mix of Appalachian music, prog-rock, and sea chanteys. Led by singer-songwriter-guitarists Tim and Jamie Monger, who also play accordion and mandolin, respectively. Also, veteran local singer-songwriter and former Maypops frontman Khalid Hanifi (7 p.m.) debuts his new CD. Hanifi is joined by bassist Oni Werth, guitarist George Bedard, keyboardist Chris benjey, and drummer Chuck Mauk. The music is followed at 10 p.m. by The Simpsons Movie, David Silverman's 2007 animated comedy based on the popular TV show. When Homer Simpson pollutes Lake Springfield with pig feces, the EPA puts a dome over the town to prevent evacuation. The Summer Festival also includes a series of Power Center shows July 2-5. The 69-year-old Civic Band is led by director Bob Gourley (tonight) and guest conductor Alex Sutton. Lemonade and popcorn available. Joel Hastings: Kerrytown Concert House. This nationally renowned Canadian-born Ann Arbor-based pianist, a U-M grad who was a 3-time winner of the music school's annual concerto competition, presents a program of elegant and virtuosic piano music, including Saint-Saens's arrangement of the Sinfonia from Bach's Cantata No. 29, Hess's arrangement of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," Grieg's Holberg Suite, Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, Liszt's arrangement of Schubert's "Liebesbotschaft," and Liszt's daunting arrangement of the Overture to Wagner's Tannhaeuser. Newsweek music critic Yahlin Chang reported that Hastings "pulled his audience to their feet with a wild performance of Liszt's Totentanz," and according to Detroit Free Press critic Mark Stryker, "he couples gale force power with spontaneity and intelligence." Beppe Gambetta: The Ark. "Beyond Glamour: The Absinthe Tour": Meow Meow (Ann Arbor Summer Festival). This mysterious and coquettish international bombshell blends exotica, performance art, karaoke, superglittery costumes, and a dash of Brechtian politics into what a Preview Magazine reviewer calls "a deconstructive tour de force that turns cabaret inside out." When Meow Meow isn't belting out cabaret tunes with her strikingly powerful voice, she asks audience members to help her through her set (and with her luggage) in a winningly whimpering parody of prima donna helplessness. Guy Sanville directs Purple Rose founder Jeff Daniels's new comedy, the tale of a showdown between 2 Wild West archetypes - a singing cowboy a la Roy Rogers and a scoundrelly outlaw. Thrown together by unfortunate circumstances, they argue over the best way to be a cowboy, while 2 other actors portray their reminiscences.
